Happy World Toilet Day Eve!

18 Nov

Happy World Toilet Day Eve!

We could think of no better way to kick of this new holiday season than with a carol sung by Louie the Loo. It’s an original and sure to be a mega international hit.

Tomorrow, Nov. 19, is World Toilet Day, a holiday officially recognized by the United Nations. We in the Western World will celebrate by appreciating (and using) our toilets. Those in developing countries will mark the Big Day as one step closer to providing a working toilet and clean running water for everyone in their community. I will celebrate by making several trips to my litter box.

While Louie the Loo may make us laugh, being without a toilet is no laughing matter. Most of us can relate to being in DIRE need of a restroom. But what if one was unavailable, or so filthy and putrid, you risked your life using it? This is the case for millions of people in countries that are struggling for clean running water and yes, safe working toilets.

Here is a horrible sad fact that makes World Water Day so necessary:

spoonsMore than 2,000 children in developing countries DIE, as in no longer live, each day from filth-borne illnesses stemming from lack of tiolets and poor sanitation. This statistic, from WaterAid America, should be enough to raise awareness, especially in first-world countries where one would not dream of letting a child ride in a car without a car seat, or letting them eat organic mush unless it was served from a BPA-free, PVC-free Latex-Free spoon (complete with carrying case!!).

We don’t mean to have a sarcastic edge here, and yes, My Publicist bought into (figuratively and literally) the safe-child hype. Of course we want our children to be safe; therefore, we should not forget about the millions of parents who cannot provide a healthy environment for their little ones.

Let’s think about these families today, tomorrow and every day until it is no longer necessary to set aside a day to recognize a basic human right.
