Happy ‘Be A Millionaire Day!’

The grassroots organization has already voted abolitionist Harriet Tubman as the new face of the $20. I could stand losing to this great lady, but to NO ONE ELSE! Vote LMA!!

Hello SK fans and the happiest of National Be A Millionaire Day to you, which we all know is celebrated with lavish feasts and over-the-top festivities from coast to coast every May 20.

Pub, Scrabble, MAD and I are just back from the parade. Oh, the traffic! But what fun. Plagiarizing a bit from the Rose Parade, all the beautiful floats were crafted out of rolled up 20 dollar bills. Miles and miles of them. It was magnificent.

Speaking of the $20 bill, this is a good time to nominate myself as the replacement for Andrew Jackson as the face of the paper currency. Some of you may be aware that last month Congressman Luis V. Gutiérrez proposed a bill that would replace Andy with a notable woman. After all, we ladies have been running government departments, running for president, running marathons, running households and running on empty in the “face on the paper currency” department for way too long now.

(Sue B. Anthony and Sacagawea are featured on dollar coins, which everyone hates receiving as change – admit it!)

Gutiérrez is running on the idea prompted by the grassroots http://www.womenon20s.org/. There are many nominees, including Eleanor Roosevelt and Harriet Tubman. Both ladies have the same values as I, and Eleanor and I had the same beautician. While I think they are splendid candidates, I think I should grace the front, and the Orchard House replace the White House on the back.

o-ELEANOR-ROOSEVELT-900Your thoughts? They are important and, as I’m always yapping about, your vote counts.

Now, back to our main topic: National Be A Millionaire Day. The good news is, you don’t have to be a millionaire to celebrate. Otherwise we would not have had to fight so much traffic on the way home from the parade.

You just have to think like one. Here are some tips we stole from the Web:

  • Start a savings account.  If you have an existing savings account, review it to make sure you are earning the maximum interest available.  Increase the deposits into your savings account.
  • Review your financial portfolio with a trusted expert.
  • Review your investments – Look at ways of improving your investments.
  • Add to your 401K – If you do not have one, start one.
  • Pay off your credit card.
  • Review your spending habits.  Find ways to “spend less and save more”

OK, so remember, tell your Congressman to vote for LMA on the $20, and then put one or more $20 toward your financial goals,

xo, LMA & Scrabble

P.S. for fun, one of the floats from today’s parade

You have my vote!! Although a vote for Harriet Tubman is tempting, I am secretly hoping for The Orchard House on the back of the bill.

Great financial advice. Though I have set all these things up years ago, you make a good point that they need to be reviewed. Some accounts I haven’t checked for awhile…who knows, maybe I’m ALREADY a millionaire! fingers crossed….

Another vote for LMA! All excellent financial advice. I did not know May 20 is Be a Millionaire Day. Seeing as it’s my birthday, I view this as a portent. Spend less, save more!

Great idea to put a woman on the $20 bill – you have my vote! I’d love to see Scrabble there too.
