Maya receives Stamp of Approval FOREVER!

24 Feb

Hello SK friends,

Maya Angelou, graceful and beautiful

Maya Angelou, graceful and beautiful

We love when we hear that one of our favorites, in this case, we’re thrilled for Maya Angelou.

This belated yet elegant beloved author, poet, actress, civil rights activists, is being honored with a Forever Stamp, according to the U.S. Post Office.

Maya Angelou inspired our nation through a life of advocacy and through her many contributions to the written and spoken word. Her wide-ranging achievements as a playwright, poet, memoirist, educator, and advocate for justice and equality enhanced our culture.

No date yet on when the beautiful stamps will be rolled out. But Scrabble and I have our eyes, ears and paws on it.

BTW: I was featured on a U.S. Postage stamp back in 1940. What do you think?

Nice. Stamps are so rarely used these days (relative) that few will see the lovely image.

I’ve never seen the LMA stamp. It is a tribute to her and her writing.

so true, we were going to add that, but trying to keep posts brief these days. It was not long ago when postage stamps were a monthly staple. Now it takes months to go through a whole sheet. Good thing they’re forever! We will buy Maya’s stamp though and keep a few, not that we’ve picked up an affinity for stamp collecting .,..

btw, don’t have a stamp of myself, either 😦

I had a collection as a kid. It was a good history and geography lesson. It seems that the PO is much more prolific with its stamps these days – there are so many commemorative images available now. Had it been this way years ago, my collection would have been so much less complete. It’d been more like collecting baseball cards, when there was always another set or player to buy.

Picked up the Batman stamps a few months ago. Check them out, you may want to start collecting again! xo LMA

I saw a Harvey Milk stamp. Who would’ve guessed?

      • Louisa May Alcatt February 26, 2015 at 10:25 am #

Harvey Milk! now that’s a collector’s item. I really enjoyed the movie with Sean Penn. If i had not made an oath to never collect anything (except my thoughts, and even that’s a challenge) I might start a stamp collection based now. Never been one for “things.” Thoughts, yes, Things? Not so much, xo m

It’s a good idea to forget about things if you can.

I’d not heard this news! As a lover of all things Maya, I too am thrilled. I’d also not seen that photo of her – stunning!
Quite a bit different from your photo, eh?

    • Louisa May Alcatt February 26, 2015 at 7:52 am #

well, we’re glad you heard it here first, and we love your choice of words “stunning.” is she ever. OK, so “stunning” was seldom, if ever, used to describe me, but I had a great personality. No wait, I was pretty moody, ok, next subject. xo LMA

Ha ha, you are too funny. I was just reading your reply to Laurie, “…but I had a great personality. No wait…”

Yay! for stamps honoring truly deserving people. I think your blog post title is distinctly clever: stamp of approval FOREVER!

Wonderful news…on both counts, as you looked so lovely on that stamp!

The Maya Angelou stamp goes on sale on April 7, 2015.

Thanks Ray! We will be buying some. I think bill paying can be fun when Maya is involved, xo LMA
