This uber-talented woman turns 85 today, and if you think some of the gals highlighted here accomplished a lot, check out this list, keeping in mind, that Maya is still plugging away so … stay tuned.

In 85 short years, Maya Angelou …

  • Has written 30 New York Times Bestsellers. (The autobiographical ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,’ holds the record for a paperback remaining on the NYT Bestseller list, 2 years.)

  • Became the first African American woman to have a screenplay produced, Incidentally that screenplay was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize

  • Has won three Grammy Awards

  • Has been nominated for a Tony Award

  • Has 30 honorary degrees from universities around the world

  • Has written a cookbook

  • learned to be fluent in seven languages

  • Held a teaching position at University of Ghana

  • Holds a teaching position at Wake Forest University

  • Gave birth at age 16, and subsequently overturned the stereotype that a black, teenaged, unwed mother is a drain on society.

  • Survived being a child rape victim

  • Was raised in the pre-Civil Rights era Deep South

  • Became a civil rights activist

  • Assisted Malcolm X in the Organization of African American Unity. She was devastated when he was assassinated.

  • Worked with Martin Luther King , until his assassination

  • Wrote the poem “On the Pulse of Morning” for President Clinton’s first inauguration

  • Continues to inspire millions around the world with her wisdom

  • Has proven goals can be reached despite the height of the hurdles in the way.
